I’ve heard some of her songs and they are creative and different, but The Oscars proved that there is more style, if you can call it that, than there is substance.
Really her performance was not great...it was okay. The song was good enough to pull off the moment. Clearly the decision makers at the Oscars were hoping that the involvement of generation cynical would create some credibility with I’ve moved on from TV crowd.

Really though what we get in image and attitude from her is not new but is just an extension of the 60’s counter-culture hippies, and 70s punk anarchy which dragged into the 80s and eventually became the grunge scene of the mid 90s. It is the same, tired message of I don’t fit in this capatalist society of greed and envy so I’m just going to act like I don’t care. The only problem is, just as it was with many before her, she is just part of the marketing machine. Has she figured it out yet or just going along for the ride while the money rolls in?

Naomi Klein figured it out back in 2000 when she wrote “marketing that thinks it’s culture’ and highlighted the fact that it’s just a way to sell more stuff.
